Oakdale Neighbors

Oakdale Neighbors helps neighborhood residents and others improve their lives and their neighborhoods through several programs:

Advocacy: Staff members assist and advocate for neighborhood residents, helping them solve problems and referring them to resources and information in the community. Oakdale Neighbors staff maintain a regular presence in the neighborhood so that residents can share ideas or seek assistance.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance: This program, part of the Kent County Tax Credit Coalition, mobilizes volunteers to help community residents prepare tax returns and claim their tax refunds and credits. The program promotes hard work (through the Earned Income Tax Credit), post-secondary education (with educational tax credits), and assists those with very limited incomes to pay important bills such as rent and utilities.

Youth Development: Oakdale Neighbors provides tutoring and mentoring in neighborhood schools. Staff offer after-school programming and mobilize volunteers to provide in-school tutoring.

Neighbor Organizing and Action: Oakdale Neighbors supports neighbors that take leadership in their neighborhood, helping neighbors connect to one another through conversation and meetings. This program seeks to strengthen the bonds of trust, increase the sense of community, and improve the capacity for collective action in neighborhoods.

Boston Square Community Bikes: This program promotes affordable, sustainable transportation by refurbishing bicycles for sale and facilitating repairs and riding through self-help, education, direct assistance, and the sale of parts. This program has implemented several school-based programs including Safe Routes to School programs in local schools to promote safe, active transportation by children to and from school.
