Creston Neighborhood Association:
Connecting North End Neighbors for Thirty Seven Years!

Mission: The Creston Neighborhood Association organizes neighborhood residents and resources to promote the social, economic and environmental health of the Creston community.

Vision: The Creston Neighborhood Association’s vision is a beautiful and diverse community where neighbors feel safe and proud, and businesses, housing, schools, and parks thrive.

Since 1979 The Creston Neighborhood Association (CNA) has worked to improve the lives of Grand Rapids’ North End neighbors by making connections!

In 2016 we connected over 250 neighbors with each other and with the community resources, leadership and service opportunities needed to make our vision a reality.

We cultivate neighborhood connections by:

Coalition building – CNA’s 37 years of organizing experience in listening and learning from neighbors and engaging Creston residents and other interested partners in our work shows! Since 2011 we have built new playgrounds in Briggs and Aberdeen Parks, two new community gardens, planted “ground breaking” urban orchards, promoted home energy efficiency and public safety programs, updated the City of GR’s housing code to include family rental homes, saved our neighborhood high school from closing, raised the funds and guided the installation of 7 unique Water Quality Islands on Plainfield Ave. with our partners in the new “North Quarter” business districts.

CNA’s ongoing success in its mission of effective advocacy is visible; in policy change on citywide housing issues and the inclusion of renters in our mission, in improved access to health care, school reform initiatives, public art placements in our business districts, and greenspace and neighborhood quality of life improvements.

Organizing Community Events and Hello Neighbor Programs – 2015-16 CNA hosted Town Hall Pancake breakfast, Living Green in Creston’s harvest fest, foraging walks, spring perennial exchange, Night to Unite on Public Safety, Community Gardens classes and clean-ups, North East Wellness Coalition, Neighborhood Night Out with Monarchs, 11th Annual Creston Days - Car Show, CNA’s Annual Membership Meeting, GR Forward Public Engagement, North Quarterly Forums, GR Food Coop formation meetings and CNA’s 10th Annual Art Battle for Community.

Engaging Volunteers - Creston neighbors, neighborhood churches, area high school and college students, and business owners donate time on a regular basis to neighborhood improvement projects and events.

Training neighbors as leaders – From block clubs where we address safety concerns, to business district leadership and development, planning and housing, energy efficiency and vacant housing issues. Neighbors building community block by block strengthens all of Creston.
